frustrated...please help!
It's my octopus skimmer again. I don't think this is right. One cup seems to be working fine, the other side is collecting all the crap under the cup and there's stuff collecting on the bottom of the system. They are both at the same height. Should they touch the water, or not? Last week the stuff was green, this time it's brown. Does it matter if it's dry or wet? What is ideal. Sorry if these questions seem repetitive...I'm just not sure if it's working right. My ph is 8.63 so I'm worried about that. Tried to call the place I bought it from but they weren't there.

There are so many reasons that one would fill better than the other, the one that comes to mind first is whether the skimmer/tank is completely level. I'm not completely sure how this unit works as I've never played with one, but I would drop the collection cup a hair on the one that isn't collecting as much. I would think of them as two different skimmers, rather than one and just get the best you can from each side.

That is how it appears two skimmers in 1 body.
I would think that one side will always a little better than the other.

First picture shows the left side, collecting crap under the cup and down the side of the canister. second picture, mostly in the cup, some collection under the cup.

It appears that the cup is too high.

I did lower the cup that isn't collecting. It was touching the water. Should they touch the water. Do I want the green or the brown? Should the sides under the cups be collecting stuff? Should I be cleaning it also? Ugggggggg........I wish I could see one that's working so i knew what to expect.

The cups should touch the water, or at least on my CPR I did. I had it about 1/4" below the waterline and adjusted it from there. My theory is to get it so that the bubbles go up into the neck and moreso pop into the collection cup on the hob models. That was just the way I liked to have them skim as it kept the small neck from getting as gummed up and allowed me about 2 days between cup cleaning.

I would say adjust the cup just a bit and give it a chance to work at that adjustment, if that doesnt work adjust it a bit more. Most skimmers are sensitive to each adjustment. You will eventually find what works best. And yes, it is frustrating in the beginning. Hopefully others with that skimmer will chime in

Yes I would make sure your air intake is clean. I don't have your model but when I see my air decrease I submerge the air hose in super hot water and let it suck the water through and it clears it right up.

Regarding the pH, I'd be very surprised if it was naturally that high, so I'd lean on it being a probe problem (either calibration or it's just gone bad). If it is actually that high, I wouldnt worry about it. I don't think it's going to hurt anything.
