Question

frozen food and phosphate

ok in another thread someone said that "if you are feeding all frozen food then that could be an issue too." I thought prepared foods(flakes/pellets) were loaded in phos. not frozen. I thought frozen is what should be feed almost all the time. Am i wrong or was this bad advise given to me in a previous thread?

hahaha that might have been me and a few others..

phosphates are the mineralzation of the dead matter that makes up the frozen food.

that is why i said to rinse it and thaw it in RO water. then rinse agian right before you palce the foods in the tank.
even though it is frozen. it was not frozen at the main company and all that slimy break down is loaded....

It may have been me as well. If the frozen food came from your grocery store in their "fresh" seafood department, chances are it is loaded with phosphate added as a preservative. Try buying frozen foods from your LFS or a real fresh seafood market if you have one.

all foods have phosphates in them. like tim said, rinse it before dropping it in the tank and you'll be a little happier down the road.

the place where I bought the seafood was a fresh seafood market he sold me his scraps. I rinsed it really well as crvz suggested. The only thing I may have done wrong was poor the juice from the oysters in with the chopped seafood. I figured it would add more flavor.

i like San Francisco Bay brand frozen foods. there are no preservatives listed in the ingredients like other frozen food brands.

in general though there will be preservatives in most of the things you buy.

It's not good. You can do the same thing just leave the water out. All dead animal tissue will have some phosphate in it. This is very different than the phosphate from decomposition or the treating with phosphate as a means of preserving the food. If there is any question of the phosphate level in the frozen food you are using you can run a phosphate test on RO/DI water then drop a piece of food in the test solution. If the water changes color it was most likely treated with phosphate. If not you're good to go.
