From industrial plant to soothing waterfall

I'd been bugged by the noise level in my 150 since it was set up, but couldn't figure out exactly what to do or what was wrong with it, since it has an Iwaki 55, a Sentry return pump, 2-Mag 18's, small Gen-X makeup to the reactor, Maxijet1200 for the refugium, plus cooling fans for the lights. Quite a racket, I must say. I figured out that most of the noise was from the Iwaki and the small GenX reactor makeup pump. Turned out the sump was picking up the vibrations of the pumps and resonating through the tank stand like the sound box on a guitar and that the calcium reactor body had gotten up against the wall so the whole darn house was vibrating!
First thing I did to resolve the resonation was to do a water change! Oh wait, wrong thread. No, I actually did do a water change, shutdown the system and after the tank had drained down below the overflow, I pumped out the sump. Removed and cleaned the external pumps, lifted the whole sump (a 55 tub tank) up and put 3/4" styrofoam over the whole bottom of the stand. Now I can actually hear the water in the overflow and since it's got a Durso, that isn't very loud at all. So funny, now that I can hear the water, I keep thinking I've got a leak, water pouring onto the floor! Still slept a lot better last night!

Glad you got that vibration stopped! Isn't it funny how a simple thing like a piece of styrofoam can make such a difference! Good job!

Great idea!!

The only thing vibrating in my sump is my submersed return pump. Any ideas what I could put under it to keep it quiet?

Hi Jen

I got a pad with a larger sized mag-pump ... quite close to what a mouse-pad material that seems to help a good bit.

Prior to that, some flex hose under the pump on either end made it a lot better, though easy to knock off the hose and end up with the old rattle.
