Freshwater swordtail to salt water????????

I know a molly can go from fresh to salt water. But I have a swordtail in my sons tank and I want to make it a salt water tank. Now can I transition him to salt water like the molly?

More than likely you can. Most hybrid swords come from a coastal linage, some don't though. They should all be able to handle salt water if you acclimate over a couple of weeks.

that would be weird.... a 'freshwater' swordtail in a marine tank.....

are platies strictly freshwater? i don't know much about their breeding history, but i thought mollies, platies and swordtails were all related kinda close, are they that close? Could you salt a platy? I have to ask....

A platy would be a little harder. Even though most come from coastal habitats, the ones that were chosen to hybridize don't and come from more inland pure fresh water. If you get the right platy, you can.

Ok, so unless i know the linage, its prolly best for the fish if i don't try?
