freshly mixed saltwater (need help)
Hey all, if I need to add freshly mixed saltwater (mixing for 2hrs.) to a tank in an emergency, what problems can I expect to face. Cuz 'um... I have this friend....ummm.... who kinda did something stupid. NOT ME, this friend was...umm...just wondering about this. So, what do you think?
Oh, and he has one other question, when a make-believe lionfish gets mauled by an imaginary trigger, how would one (NOT ME) treat the extensive wounds on said fish? (if by some slim chance this ever really happened, which it hasn't, but pretend that it did)

Chris, newly mixed SW will show slightly elavated ammonia, and is caustic, untill it has a chance to let the ambient CO2 do its thing on calcium, carbonates ansd stuff, TD explains this better. In small amounts ou are prolly OK but major (25% or more I would at least do overnite with a power head to vigorously mix and aireate
OK now to the Lionfish injuries, how bad is it, and what happened to the alleged triggerfish. If the lion has open wounds I recommend carefully putting it in a Q tank or seperating it and trating the ounds with Iodine bath, followed by medicated flakes.
Needless to say, excersise extreme caution and dont try to dab it on with a Q tip, tell your "friend" good luck

I hope your 'friend' doesnt have the same cute blueline trigger that you have in a similar tank with a similar fuzzy dwarf lionfish. Even at the size of a quarter, im surprised it did some damage already to a lion who has established territory long time. bummer chris, i hope everything is ok for your 'friend'

Thanks, I wil try a search on iodine baths and such to find out how much , how long, etc... As far as medicated flakes I don't think he's in the mood to eat, and wouldn't eat flakes even if he was in the mood. He has barely learned to eat dead food at all.
The damge is pretty bad, pec fin filaments are destroyed w/ a couple of the rays broken, the tail fin has been chewed all the way to the base of the caudal peduncle, both eyes are cloudy and bulging somewhat, also he appears to have a hole torn in his right gill which worries me the most.
This was the antenneta, the fuzzy seems to have held his ground somewhat, slight evidence of tailfin chewing. I believe it was that the trigger wanted the spot claimed by the antenneta, or maybe he's just an sob. We'll see. I'm lucky I got home (to my friends house ) when I did, or he wouldn't have a chance at all. It's made me realize how much I care about the lions.
I'm with stupid ->

Hey there all, I just loaded some photos from my camera and a pick I took of the injured lion was still on there so I thought I'd post it. It's a little blurry because he is in a specimen container hanging inside the tank, the blue thing is an airstone. Unfortunately he was dead the next morning.
you can see the non-existent tail fin, pec damage, scrapes on his side, cloudy eyes, etc... poor little fish, didn't deserve it that's for sure.

Poor guy,
Sorry to hear about the loss.
I really like Lions, I had one a while back, I got him at about 1 inch and sold him back to the LFS at about 6 inches. After a while he was eating everything... Live or dead fish, frozen food and even flakes. He ate probably a hundred baby cichlids at his prime.
