fragging leathers

I have a very pretty umbrella leather that i want to frag. Can i just cut any peice of him like maybe a ripple from his crown then cut that into 4-5 differant peices and end up with 6 leathers? Will any peice from it turn into a whole new leather? even if its pretty tiny? also can you frag any coral? like say mushrooms polyps or pulsing zenia?

With the leathers, you can pretty much slice n dice any way you want! I've sliced off pieces, cut an inch off all around leaving only the center of the cap on the stem, and, I've completely decapitated them. The stem always grows a new head, and the cut edges have always healed and grown back. You might want to make sure each piece you cut is at least approx. 1" square because the new frag will shrink up some as it reforms into a normal shape.

Most of the softies and sps frag well, although each species might have specific requirements as to the tecnique used to frag it. Some don't take well to cutting, such as hairy mushrooms, and colt corals, so other methods are used. LPS, especially the massive stony types are harder (due to problem of dividing skeleton) but some are also just more delicate. Garf.org has some good articles on fragging. garf.org

Shrooms are the eaisest to frag: several ways to do it, the slow way just lay another rock or rocks next to it and eventually they will crawl over onto it. The quick way, cut the cap off, then slice into pizza wedges trying to get a piece of the mouth and then place in a low flow area - place in a covered container with lots of holes and some LR rubble on the bottom or even CC. in a couple of weeks they will be attach and starting to grow out. Just glue the piece of rock that they are on - on to a bigger piece of rock.

Zenia - you can just lay a piece of rock next to the stalk and in a day or two it will attach, just cut off of the 1st rock but make sure there is still some of the "root" there and that too will grow back.

Here is good site just for fraggin that many "newbies" been to (including me long time ago) http://www.garf.org/
