Fraggin a toadstool ?

Hi TRT, i just watched some videos on utube about fragging a toadstool and some of them attach the frag by using a rubberband and wrap it to the rock. I'm just not sure can we glue the frag to the rock or frag plugs like we frag zoanthids? because when i was watching them wrapping the rubberband around the toadstool, i have a feeling it would block the toadstool to open up! and how long do we suppose to keep that rubber band there? Thanks!

Sorry, don't have any videos but....

I use a scalpel to cut the tissue. Brand doesn't really matter, but I use Boston Aqua farms. There are multiple ways to cut a frag. Personally, I prefer to cut off a few small squares of the cap, say about 1/2" x 1/2". Then, I take the 1/2" frags and attach them to rubble rock with the small rubberbands my wife uses for her hair (shhh.... don't tell). At this time, I prefer to do an iodine dip on the coral, but I don't know that it is necessary. I usually check the frags after about a week. It typically takes them about 2 weeks to attach to the rubble rock, at which point the rubberband can be removed. This technique has worked very well for me

If the frag is larger, you can also pierce it with a toothpick (cocktail swords work great) to attach it to the rubble. I have always found this method to be less reliable.

Some people prefer to place the frag in a small container covered with netting with rubble rock and wait for it to settle.

HTH

I have had great luck with the little 1" tiles and toadstool frags using thread and wraping it figure 8 -attaching the frag to the tile. After the toadstool is well attached, you can cut the thread, and even if the coral has grown over the thread, it still easily come back through.

i've had "frags" falling off my toadstool and i just scoop them up off the bottom of the tank and then rubberband them to the piece i want it on. takes about 12-14 days before you can remove the rubber band. you know it's about ready when they star extending all the polyps that aren't covered by the rubberband. the rubberband will ook like it's cutting into the frag but it isn't, just holding down the areas from fully expanding. i keep my frags high in the tank for the first 2 weeks to help the symbiotic algae create enough nourishment until the polyps are extending and can take a feeding...good luck...share some pics!!

If possible, I don't like using glue on softies, especially leathers and mushrooms. They slime up and disappear. Plus, the glue heats up as it sets, burning the coral.
