Frag Price

I know this question may be very broad, depending on the coral, but how much should I pay for a frag?

there are a lot of variables. i try to never pay more than 10$ but then there are some of those "name branded" frags that cost more. if you buy in a lfs itll cost more. the biggest thing to remember is how much are you willing to pay for a small piece of coral that may or may not live in your tank.

Thanks for the quick reply. I was hoping to pay no more than $10-$15, but I will be buying from my lfs.

you may find some brown ones for a few dollars. some stragglers may cost a few dollars. but if your lfs doesnt culture them then expect to pay several dollars for a small piece.

I usually pay 10$ for all my frags. But my LFS also has "premium frags" for 25$, which are usually two heads of ricordea, two or three heads of blastomussa, or smaller fungia. But +1 to 10$-15$ being the best price.

I live in Florida and the average here is 10-20 bucks a frag. More for colonies.

I usually try to buy off Craigslist. Lfs prices are usually steep.

But watch out for parasites since I doubt CL people quarantine before selling to you...

Well...that's like saying how much should you pay for a car.....$1000 or $60,000

I've seen frags sell at frag swap as low as $5 all the way up to $400+

It all depends on

-the size of the piece. Is it small cut off the mother colony? Or is it the whole colony. Obviously the smaller portion the cheaper. Small frags are in the $10-$20 range. Whole colonies $30 to $80+

- how rare it is? You get into rare Australian corals you are in the $100 to $500+ range. The farther the coral is from its natural origin the higher the price. Caribbean corals are cheaper than stuff from the other side of the world.

-size? Larger size, more money.

-quality? More color, more money.
.
Bottomline is LFS will sell you a whole colony at about 3-times what they paid for it. To cover their cost to care for it. In When they take a whole colony and frag out 10+ pieces, they are trying to increase their profits even more than 300%. Might seem like a huge markup but the LFS has rent, electricity, payroll, taxes, supplies. They are lucky to breakeven even when selling at huge margins

So.... It comes down to really what you are willing to pay for it.

BUYING TIP:

Practically ever frag seller WILL bargain with you. I always ask "how much?" And whatever they come back with I offer them 75% of that price. Asking 50% off half-off is usually an insult to the Seller, so avoid that.
I usually get the piece asking 25% off. The seller doesn't want to pass up a fair offer and the coral sit there for another 1-2 months.
