Foggy eye and Bacteria

Hi Guys,
I am having some problem and am a bit worried about what my local fish store told me.

First problem, we had a bacteria outbreak, a browinsh slime that was covering most of the rocks. Our local fish store guy told us there are a few ways to get rid of it, but the "easiest" is to keep the lights out for several days and it should go away. We did that, and one fish died, although our corals and polyps are fine. Now the bacteria is almost gone, although there is a little left. First question, my guess is that it should be all gone or it would come back, is that correct? Maybe there are other ways to kill the bacteria, but I am not home now, and can send pictures of it if we still have problems when I get back.

Second problem: Now our Yellow tang has developed a cloudy eye. Just one, but it is milky white. Does anyone know what this could be and remedies? Again, when I get back home on Tuesday I can post some picts, but I am close to a good store and would like to have some ideas of what to buy at a store that has a much larger selection than the one I go to. Unfortunately, I live outside the US so ordering online is also out.

Tank Specs: 25g tank, 3x24 watt VHO flourescents, prism skimmer, 40lbs live rock, 1" sand bed, 1 Leather coral, 1 star polyps, 1 cleaner shrimp, 1 lawnmower blenny, 1 yellow tang, various snails and hermit crabs,

I don't know about your bacterial problem - if your tank is new it may be its just diatom algae - something that all new tanks go through, takes time but will go away, feeds off of silicates in your water. Looks like a brown dusting all over your sand & glass. Using RO-DI topoff should take care of it after a few weeks, just looks ugly for a while.

As for the cloudy eye, that is probably a bacterial infection due to eye damage & secondary infection. The Yellow Tang is not a good fish for a 25G tank - needs at bare minimum a 75G. Tangs like to swim a lot. Also, that fish is likely to injure itself in a tank that small.

Has your tank finished cycling? Toxic ammounts of ammonia can cause that type of eye damage as well, then leads to secondary infection... There are medicines for the eye, but I would look to the needs of the animal first. Check water quality, do water changes to get params in check, move into a larger tank, etc. I can't remember the med name cuz I've never used it.

Anyway, that might not be your issue (cycling, new tank syndrome, etc.) but the tang is definitely too small for the 25

I agree with the advice you have gotton so far. Can you tell us how long the tank has been set up and any other details such as how you top off and how you change the water. Also what food are you feeding the tang?

The tank has been set up for over two years and the Tang has been in there for over a year. We switch between feeding it flakes and frozen "prime Reef" food. The outbreak started a few weeks ago and we thought it was just Algae, so we removed most of it manually, and changed the water. The next day it was back to the same amount...
