Flow Rate

What is the best flow rate for a return from my sump? I have mostly soft corals and mushrooms and plan on expanding to include a few LPS in the near future. My tank is only a 30gal, but I want to upgrade so does that tank size affect flow rate?

What are you using the sump for? If just equipment then I have been told that you only need as much flow through the sump that your skimmer can handle. At least that's what I have been told.

Id like to use it for equipment and also as a refugium.

BINGO! That's your answer there.

If you need More flow, then a CLS (closed loop system) or power heads in the tank itself are the best way to achieve this.

But your flow through the sump should be NO more than the flow rate of your skimmer.

someone will hopefully chime in with the ideal flow for softies/LPS's. I know you want a bit of flow, but don't need a whole lot. My guess? 10x turnover. But that's a guess. SOmeone will chime in with a more concrete answer.
