floating orb

I've got a few green irridecent bubbles in my tank. They're not in colonies, but just here and there. About the size of a small Enghlish pea, but dark green. The other day I dislodged one, and it went floating around with the flow of the water. I thought these were bubble algae a while back, but now I don't know. Whatchoo think?

PS I need some reef grammar lessons. Is "algae" plural?

Hi ya, cath,

Alga singlar; Algae plural
*If Ron were here, he'd be on you like a pile of ...algaes, hehe. (J/K, the man is a sweetheart.)

Your description seems to match that of a young Valonia ventricosa bladder, so yeah, bubble algae. When they're small they can be easy to sever at the holdfast by 'dislodging'. Buoyancy varies, so they can float or sink.

Any chance you can post a pic?
Then we might know for sure if you should start tearing your hair out

I don't know cath, it sounds like Valonia to me, and yes each bubble is an alga, they be single celled . Sounds like you need a pearl diver to recover it;-)

Cool

Cath,
Unless the Jolly Green Giant has been visiting your tank, sounds like Valonia to me as well. They can vary widely in size and color and are some of the largest unicellular organisms.
Here is a picture of Ventricaria ventricosa (Valonia ventricosa):

I'm not a scientist; I just like to look at the pictures!

Cool

Dick- Are you sure that isn't a Christmas tree ornament left over from the Truman Administration? Actually, the bubble that is still attached (aka alga, Horge) looks just like that. I've got to get some pix of my tank to post here so that I can better show what I've done so far.

I want Ron to know that I do know some Latin: amo, amas, amat
