Float switch question

I'm getting my float switch and shut off valve tomorrow, I was wondering, should I put the shut off valve on the RO output and the float switch on the wastewater, since my wastewater will fill up quicker then my RO water?

Not sure what you ae trying to do. But, the waste water -you can just have it go down the drain, go outside to water plants, fill up a 55gal drum to use for the washer and then the overflow from this to the above mentioned.

But if you did what you mention, the water would not come out.

I think that you want to hook up the ro to your sump to refill when it goes down. Then this case attach the float to the sump - so when the water goes down the switch will open the valve and the water will fill.

There is a thread on RC about this. But everytime the ro cycled some of the regular would leach through and this one gal in TX had this same setup- lost everything in the tank cause the city was doing a "cleaning" of the water system and used concentrated chlorine which came through the ro/di, ruined the membrane and the tank.

Are you just using ro only? I would suggest a di as well. Less problems down the road.

side question: I see a lot of people have their RO/DI's set up that way.

Water IN to RO/DI always on. Water out to Sump, float switch.

Is there any harm to the RO/DI unit to have water pressure always pushing in the unit, but output being shut off most of the time?

That post about the leaking thru the ro/di is here but I have not narrowed it down - lots of pages http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/sh...5&pagenumber=1

Some have the out put form the ro/di to a holding "can" and inturn this feeds a kalk reactor like mine does.

Truthfully, if you set up the RO/DI output directly to the sump with a float switch what's the worst that can happen? Your gone for a day and the float switch sticks open, your sump overflows onto the floor and eventually dilutes all your saltwater to fresh.

If you put a freshwater reservoir to topoff your sump, with a manual valve to refill the reservoir and a float valve in the sump what's the worst that can happen. The reservoir will pump down, maybe overflow your sump but only dilute the tank to the volume of your reservoir. I know, I'm paranoid, but those switches always fail, eventually.
