flame angel : safe or not safe
I've seen on several sites that sell fish that flame angels are reef safe but one of them said there weren't . I wont say what one it was . Whats everyones take on them , are they safe for the most part ? Yes I know there's no such thing as a "REEF SAFE FISH" , but just wanted to know for those that have or had one did they have any problems with them with their corals .
And since where on the subject of them has anyone ever kept one with a coral beauty or any other kind of pygmy angel. They are my two favorite fish and I already have a C/B but would love a F/A as well and have a chance to get one really cheep .(the guys going coral only) Oh by the way they'll be in a 150 gallon tank thats 7 feet long with about 120lbs of live rock .
Thanks

They have the possibility of picking on corals and clams. Normally they are a 50/50 shot, some people get ones that never touch corals/clams and some people get ones that literally pick things to death.
I consider all pygmy angels not reef safe. Mostly because one tank tear-down to remove a fish was enough for me.

I think they are very pretty but will not get another one with the stuff we have in our tank.

A few yrs ago I had both in a 75 gallon tank and they fought(mostly just flashing) for a day or two then they were fine. I know have a 150 reef tank and have had flame in there for a yr now. No big problems every now and then I see her pick at my candy canes but not repeatedly and I see no damage to the candy cane. How ever I dont have any zoas so I cant say about those.

They really are 50/50 chance.Buy it local ,so you can take it back if it isn't.

I'd say not worth it. I've had enough trouble with various dwarf angels to give up on them. Although the cherub angel has my attention.

Had one that was ok did not have any sps then mostly shrooms and leathers, now have a flameback that has not picked at any corals soft or hard. I think it is an individual result from one fish to the next. Good Idea buying at lfs on a provisional basis based on tank compatibility if they will let you. They are beauties, mine was moderatly aggressive

It is really hit or miss, some have a taste for corals, some don't. It is just a risk you will have to be willing to take when you add one to a reef system.

Thanks for everyones advise , I'm gonna give it a try and see how it works out . I'll be able to keep an eye on if for a few days . If its doesn't work I'll put it in my son in laws fowlr tank. I have a few zoa's but they're nothing special . I'll let every one know in a week or so how it went .

You need to get one from the deep water in Hawaii, they don't eat coral. most others do.

In a large tank like you have, I think you'll be fine. I have a CB, a flame, and a pygmy angel in my 450g tank. It's 10x2x3 feet and I see them cruising the rocks all day long and I've never seen them pick at corals or the clam. The flame got moved down to the 450 from a 120 and in that tank, I DID see it picking at corals. I think if they're provided enough room, they'll find enough GOOD stuff to eat on the rocks, which is their preferred food, and leave the corals alone.
That is based on what I've seen in my big tank though. You have a large enough tank that I think they'll be fine.
