Fish Only tank question

I'm considering doing a fish only tank with live rock. My wife is always bugging me for fish that would wreck my reef - triggers, puffers...I want to do a 90 or 120. Any advice would be helpful. Wet/dry filter? Sump like I have on my reef? how about substrate. I don't think I want a DSB, especially if I'll have fish that will dig it up. Lighting? Would NO bulbs be OK.? My last fish only tank was years ago and had a undergravel filter plus a Aqua Clear 500 on the back. NO bulbs (2- 48"). There was no skimmer, UV. Very simple and I had healthy fish. I know some of you reefers out there have fish only tanks also and I would like any input. Thanks, have a good weekend!

Hi Gary

I have a 75 gallon FO tank and I have a magnum 350 canaster with two bio wheels on it, an UG filter with two powerheads and I just used crushed coral for the bottom. oh plus a heater of course lol. For the lighting its just a 48" flor. regular fish tank bulb. Mine is very simple but it works. Am not sure if that helps or not though

Have a great weekend.

everything kita said is perfect but if your going to have live rock i would get a double strip bulb and run cheap reqular flores designed for reefs like the one coralife and aqua glo put out thats all i keep on my folr tank and i fave terfic green and purple algae incrusting my rocks didnt get with regular flores. on a tank that size you could ditch the ug so you dont have a nitrate trap and run one penguin empores and a canister filter and a protein skimmer. That allows you to get a clown trigger, and some valtenie puffers, reglar puffers, wrasses (red coriss is fabulus). upss sorry just thinking what i would put in there you get whatever you want lol

Hey Gary

I started a 90g fowler about a 3 weeks ago. I got 2 emperor 400's, remora skimmer, and 1 maxijet 900. I have about 3 inches of cc ( thinking about taking some out ) and 50 pounds of LR. I have 1 40w 48" 50/50 bulb and 1 48" actinic bulb.

Hey Gary-

On our 110g FO we have a 3.5" sandbed, about 80 pounds of live rock, a turboflotor skimmer, heaters, refugium with caulerpa, and two maxijets for circulation. We'll probably add a bio-wheel type filter at least for a little while. Oh..we also have the marine glow and power glo NO bulbs (2 of each). These have more Lux than other NO bulbs, but run on an electronic ballast...so they aren't compatible with all NO ballasts. We'll probably upgrade the lighting to VHO at a later date. FWIW, we have good coralline growth under this light (it likes lower light situations anyhow).

HTH-
Brooke
