They are rather timid. Some members might actually call them girly.

They can be a bit timid at first, definately not super macho, but comfortable in their own fishness once they get comfy in their surroundings

There is a huge Firefish thread that you may want to check out over in Margaritaville.

I got to give you props on that Doug,.. "Confortable in their own fishness",..
I have 2 in my 15 and they won't even hide from the mag cleaner.

If you have a pair you can,.. from what I've read they will either get along or fight,.. 50/50 chance or so.

I've read up alot on it too and it seems odd numbers work better. A friend of mine has 3 together and they get along great.
I had 2 in a QT and one harassed the other non-stop.
I moved the harassee to the main tank and the other one died in the QT.
I will be adding 2 more here shortly.
I believe tank size plays a big part too. My friend has a 240 and I have a 120. Smaller tanks lead to more aggression, from what I have read, than larger ones. My QT is a 29.

When I bought mine I got two. They hid for about a week. Then one killed the other one. They don't even hide now when I am working in the tank.

The purple firefish is very cool,.. but known to be a little more agressive,.. if you are to only have one, I would probably go purple,.. I went red because I found 2 that were always in the open and always together at the LFS so I figured they would make a good pair in my tank.
