Finally Checked My Magnesium Level

I bought a Salifert Mg kit on my recent trip to Chicago. Since I had never checked it before I really had no idea where it would be.

I am reading 1230.

I know it needs to be between 1300 and 1500.

What is the best way to get it up there?

Mg should be 3X CA,. so if your CA is 420 your MG should be 1260,.. yes I used a caculator for that.

I use Magflake to raise MG, but allot of people use Kent MG and I've used it in the past without issue,..

Whiskey

Ca is sitting at 400. Not too bad then.

Sorry to hyjack the thread, but why did people here tell me that my magnesium had to be 1350? My calcium is 400, so the MG should be fine at 1200, right?

IIRC, natural seawater has a Mg value of around 1350ppm, that's why most people will recommend that number.

alot of people tend to keep their mag, cal, and alk, a little on the high side, i assume its so it can slip down a bit and not get depleted too much, so they can dose it back up. how ever you go about it, everything should be in balance, like whiskey said.

As Wiskey stated, Ideally...Mg should be 3x's Ca's level.

The reason some people/sites say aim for 1350, is cause those same sights tell you aim for CA levels of 450 (450x3=1350).

Calcium levels anywhere from 350-450 are perfectly fine. Depending on what your Ca level is, your MG level should be based on that.

Specifically, Magnesium:

Have you checked the 2 part recipe from reefkeeping.com?

http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2006-02/rhf/index.php

From memory epsom salts is the 3rd part of the 2 part recipe that is added for Mg - but I'm not sure how much you add to get numbers to where you want them (normally you are supposed to add 1 cup of part 3 every time you finish a gallon of parts 1 and 2 I think).
