I am running a tetratec canister filter in my reef tank, along with a protein skimmer and built in mechanical filter. It's a 57g tank with LR, any thoughts pls.

since you have live rock you don't really need the mechanical/canister filter. Holds lots of nitrates what i have heard. I have a 46 with only LR and a skimmer and powerheads and everything is GREAT. I used to use chemi-pure (the black bagged stuff) in my hang on back mechanical filter. When I got rid of it (the HOB) I stopped using the chemi-pure. That would be the only reason i would see to keep using a filter is to put stuff for the tank in it, but it was too much of a hassle for me b/c had to be cleaned too much.

even with a uv filter attached? so there is no benefit

I can't remove the built in filter, so i suppose i could use it for phosphate control(rowaphos) in filter media and carbon for water clarity?
