Filtering

As the water is pouring into the overflow chambers, it sounds like a toilet. So I cut one of those black plastic sponge type tubes (like foam kinda) and placed it inside the overflow to reduce the sound. It cut the noise down big time, but is this a good thing to do?

The water flows right on top and I thought about cleaning then weekly to reduce smell etc.

I just posted another thread about my skimmer not skimming much...could these two be related?

what you did is one solution. it would be a good idea to clean that out once a week. that is the only downside to what that solution.

another way that a lot of people do is extend the drain upwards and make either a Stockman or Dursa stove pipes inside the overflows. Jay has good info on doing this. just do a search for either of those terms.

Can you post a picture of your overflow, would make it easier to suggest a fix, but raising the level in it will help

overflow chamber

Not original but what I did on my overflow chamber was this:

I have a 1" hole @ the bottom of the chamber. I simply got a piece of 1" dia. PVC and drilled 1/4" dia. holes in it, starting about 6" up the pipe. That raises the water level in the chamber. Of course the height you begin your holes will depend on how high your chamber is. I then placed a 45° elbow on the top of the pipe to allow any water run into the pipe smoothly in case the prefilter media gets clogged up. You can place a piece of filter in the elbow as well to further silence the water flow. I also had a top plate made for my overflow box which in combination with the other items really works!!!
