Filter Sock ?

Is a filter sock a good thing to have? I'm starting to see more people with them.

It seems like it would do the same thing as a pre-filter sponge and I thought people were mostly against them. I've heard that if you don't rinse them out every couple of days they became a nitrate farm and that they aren't worth the work.

Any opinions? How often should they be rinsed out? Would you put it before the skimmer or just before the return pump?

I use a filter pad but because i don't do any real feeding, i don't have to rinse it as often. If you have a FOWLR tank then you would want to rinse it out once a week or more to get any left over food out. it's better than leaving the food to circulate through the system...
