film on top of water???
I have a weird thin film on top of the water in my tank. I would like to know what it is and how to get rid of it. Any help would be cool. Thanks!

It looks oily with what looks like small dust particles in it. no odor that i can smell, of course my alergies prevent that pretty good....heh. Its very thin from what i can see and it leaves little to none clinging to the glass when the water evaps out a little bit. Just showed up about 2 days ago. the rest of the tank is really clear.

Last water change was yesterday, about a 25%. I make sure to wash my hands pretty good when i have to reach in. My tests show up normal nitrate 0 amm 0 and nitrite 0. Could oil from your skin cause this?? IM new so im at a loss here...

Do you have a sump or any surface skimming going on?
Open top or full canopy?
Sound like a build-up of proteins / dust. You may want to agitate the surface of the water with a powerhead. That will break it uo and keep it from forming.
Need a little info on the set up. Sump? Skimmer? Circulation? Size? Canopy? Location?

That is exactly the stuff a protein skimmer should be removing. How is the skimmer set up? I assume its a hang on, but how far under the surface is the pump. You may want to think about adding some sort of skimmer box to the pump. This will allow the pump to skim the surface of the water where the proteins build up, making it much more effective.

Yeah, you are going to need more flow, surface agitation and you may want to think about removing the glass top.
I like those cube tanks, how long has it been up? Will this be fish only of reef?

Do a seach online for DIY surface skimmer, protein skimmer modifications, etc. There should be several links that will provide detailed descriptions on how to set up a surface skimmer on your protein skimmer.
