My feather just died and you can smell it. They can loose the feeding feathers and be okay tho. I think mine was sick when I got it.

If its not attached to rock you may want to take a whiff just to be sure. Dont want it to rot in the tank. Some times if you sqeeze the tube a little it may cause it to stir and you can feel it.

I have two dusters and both have shed their crowns at some point. After about a week or two you'll see a new crown start to emerge, but yes, do a smell test... if it's alive just let it be, it'll be ok!

Ive had several feather dusters drop thier feathers and with in month started growning back. Like Jena said smell the rock if you can if it stinks your feather duster may be dead.

If You can see and get to the tube just squeeze it with very little pressure, You will feel it and it will move in the tube. Thats what I do at The store to find any dead ones.
