Eheim 1260 or 1262?
I am trying to decide which pump to get for my return, which would you go with? Here are the spec's for each
1260 Hobby Pump
634 gph with a max head of 12.1 feet at 65 watts. Input 25/34 mm, output 16/22 mm.
1262 Hobby Pump
898 gph with a max head of 11.8 feet at 80 watts. Input 25/34 mm, output 16/22 mm.
It will be the return on a 40 gallon sump feeding a 90 gallon display, my overflow is capable of 600 gph. I will be using the "herbie" overflow method to plumb it in.

look into this method. I used to be a herbie fan, but this is easier and every bit as quiet

get the 1262.
you will be putting a ball valve on it after the pump anyway so you can control the flow to match your skimmers output. more flow ptential is better than less

Thanks for the quick response Fly Guy! I will look into that other method. It does seem simpler. With that method you still can use the second hole in you overflow for the return right? Where as with the herbie method you use both as drains.

yes..but if your overflow has the typical 1" drain, and 3/4" return, I dont think thats an acceptable back up drain hole for the herbie style anyway. your back up drain should be at least the same size as the original. no sense in setting up this back up system if there is a chance it wont keep up and could flood your floor anyway.

I'm not contradicting the experts above, they really are more knowledgeable than me, and the 1262 is great, but I just went with the 1260 on my 75 (as mentioned above, had to use a ball valve to reduce the flow). The reason I went w/ the 1260 is because of heat. I don't want a chiller and the 1260 is 15 less watts. Since the 1260 is plenty of power anyway, why add the extra heat? Just a thought.

That power difference would be pretty negligible... the ehiem pumps are really effecient (compared to others) at putting the power draw to water movement instead of heat, and I wouldnt worry about that couple of watts. But if you didnt need the flow, then it was surely a good decision!

The guy at the LFS said the mag pumps are better pumps and last longer, so now I am really confused.

sounds like the LFS sells mag pumps and not eheims. Don't get me wrong, I've used mag pumps longer than eheim (and still use a mag 9 for my return), but in terms of heat addition and sound, I'd go with an eheim every single time.

I guess I need to learn to take everything I hear at the LFS with a grain of salt....I trust you guys alot, since we are the consumers and you guys have experience, you aren't trying to sell me something. I have seen some of your guy's tanks and you definitely know what you are doing.

I have used both Mags and Ehiems - like Chris said, the Ehiems are definitely quieter, produce less heat. By reputation, they last longer too, but I haven't used mine long enough to say for sure. As stated above, we're not selling you anything, just stating our experiences. A LFS is like a car dealer, you pull up to a Ford dealership and I'm pretty sure they're gonna tell you how wonderful Fords are. Likewise, a LFS will tell you how wonderful all the stuff on their shelves are.

I am going to stick with the eheim 1262, In fact I am ordering it tonight, I can't handle sitting and staring at an empty tank.

ummmm.
Its kind of like comparing a toyota corolla and BMW. dont get me wrong....Mags are great and get the job done. But they are no eheim. Thats actually NOT a good analogy, as chances are your BMW will need to go to the shop before the corolla. lol Unlike the eheim.
