Egg On My Face
One of those lessons learned. I woke up this morning to find my skimmer was not working. So I pulled the pump off and cleaned the tubes and connectors (like I alway's do). Still not working. So I call lfs, they tell me to bring it in and they would replace it, at no charge. I get there, and the guy pops the top off and asks me if I ever clen the gears and motor. I look at him, and say "I didn't even know you could". He say's "well you might want to" wipes it out and it runs fine. I love looking stupid . Anyway don't laugh at me to hard.

Nick,
Not a laughing matter at all!
Yes, powerheads do need to be cleaned regularly to keep them running at peak efficiency. Most of us aren't self-disciplined enough to have "Clean Powerheads" penciled in on our calendars at scheduled intervals but part of the daily eyeball check is to notice if they appear to be pumping or are covered in reef goop. It's amazing how much they will lose their punch over a few months.
That reminds me, my skimmer pump needs cleaning!

Gears = Impeller
Moter = Magnet
That is the proper translation from LFS speak to Reef keeper Speak.

Quickest way I know to clean powerheads is to let them run in a container of white vinegar for about 15 mins followed by several fresh water rinses

pumps failing
When I put in my sump and protein skimmer at the end of July they were powered by 2 Rio pumps, a 1200 and a 2500. In about 6 weeks they started to stop running intermittently and now the 2500 is dead in the water. The 1200 is still intermittent. I looked at the impeller and it was clean on both units and the motor is sealed and I didn't want to open the case and possible void the still active warranty.
Are Rio's any good? I wil be sending the 2500 back for repair, - but they say it will take 4 to 6 weeks to do and I'm thinking about getting a replacement pump. Any suggestions?
Thanks
Jerry

Hi Jerry, if you do a search here, reefcentral and reefs.org you'll get more of an answer than you probably wanted. There have been quite a few people that have had rios seize and end up shorting in their tanks.
Nick, I think we've all had egg on our faces at one time or another. I've gone into places with something and have had an attitude. THAT is always fun to eat humble pie after.

Another lesson learned I'll be checking for better brands tonight. I'm also glad I bought aGFI breaker for that circuit this morning. I didn't have one, it is in my living room, and I wasn't too concerned before because I always pulled the plugs before I worked on the tank.
Thanks for the help.
Jerry
