Eclipse 6
before i had gotten addicted to "the reef" i had an Eclipse 6.
i have been told it would work and i have seen one set up for a mini reef...
my question is does it really work?
how does the system replace the skimming process?

I have one at work. I don't skim, but I do a 1.5 g water change weekly, change the filter pad weekly and top off everyday except weekends. I keep the bioload low too. The light in the hood is not enough for anything photosynthetic. I added a 13w PC to the hood and the light is nice..but still not super bright. I might look into the Jalli PC hoods. They aren't too expensive and look very nice. Some people have crammed PC lights into the eclipse hood with good results and some have completely melted their tanks....not good.
I have a couple of mushrooms, feather duster, zoanthids, green star polyps and a diadem dottyback in mine and it is doing great. I have 2 snails and 2 hermits for cleanup and about 6 pounds of live rock.

In a small tank it is probably a good idea to do water changes during the cycle to keep ammonia levels from getting really toxic. Might change a little every third day or so depending on ammonia measurements. This tank didn't really cycle at all...the sand and rock was from the reef tank.
No prob on spelling my name

The lighting and filter was all as it came. I didn't change anything but the filter pads each water change. I think my main reason for success is that I live 5 minutes from the beach, and I get my water from the ocean. It makes life alot easier. As you can see though, most if not all of the corals in that tank don't need lots of light. Good luck!

1 more q. do you think it would be wise to add live sand... to help make cycling easier?

I'm not an expert on this area, but the sand you see in that picture is all 'live sand'. Again, the cycle process isn't really a big issue when I use ocean water. Good luck, glad I could help.
