Durso-standpipe question

My husband made a durso stand pipe following the directions
here http://www.dursostandpipes.com/

The tank is still loud though so a couple of questions

1. the hole in the cap is about 3/8" should this be larger/smaller to reduce the noise?

2. the directions stated it's better to have the pipes to the sump run at an angle instead of straight down. Our plumbing is straight is this really a factor in the gurgling in the overflow?

The sump is in the basement so noise in the sump is not an issue it's just the gurgling in the overflow.

Hi DJ, lots of people recommend putting airline in the hole, & others expand on that idea by putting a silencer on the end of that tubing, or a air valve so you can adjust the flow of air.

Just my before someone with actual experience chimes in.

If you place your finger over the hole (vary amount of hole covered) does it reduce the noise?

Yes but then the water level goes up

how much does the water go up? can you shorten the pipe the same amount to fix that? i head you want a 3" difference from the top of display water to the top of the over flow water. so it has enough runoff to skim the surface good. might be something to think about .

how tall is the installed durso overflow in relation to the overflow wier itself??? I guess a way to describe it wuld be how far down into the overflow is the opening of the donward facing opening for the water, and how far up the assembly does the water actually rise when the drain runs wide open?

It's pretty hard to see in the pic but the top of the cap is about even with the wiers (if the wiers are the slots in the overflow)

what size is the bulkhead? what size pipe are you using for the Durso. it is a good idea to use one size larger for the durso pipe than what the buklhead is. if you have a 1" bulkhead, use a 1-1/4" pipe for the durso.

that hole looks a bit big. i like to start with an 1/8" hole and expand it bigger if need be.

I'm pretty sure the bulk head is 1" and the standpipe is 1 1/4. George is going to get a new cap and I'll have him start with an 1/8" vent hole this time. Does the height seem right?

the top of mine has a tip that comes up about a cm. the pipe then goes down about 3 inches below waterlevel and has a grate on it to keep large things like snail from going down the overflow. It is 1 inch pvc. Totally quite. The tip comes up about 1/2 inch over the overflow box.

dont know about the dursos as much but i had good results with a stockman pipe in mine, and instead of drilling holes in the cap i put in a valve that i drilled and tapped the cap for, i also have a tee with another cap and valve in my drain line, once i played with the valves for long enough my tank is virtually silent

If you are going to replace the cap, drill the airhole through the side of the cap and through the pvc that connects the cap to the T. Then you just turn the cap to adjust the size of the hole. Works great and is a very cheap fix.

Well we put a piece of airline tubing in the vent hole it seems to be working fine now.

The air line fix is a means of controlling your air to water ratio that works, over time, make sure that salt and calcium carbonate accretion do not block the vent. Sometimes it will help to experiment with the length of the air line to control variabiity in water flow, but the best fix is the photo below, many jaco fittings are available that can be tapped into the opening cap for infinite adjustability:
