Question

Dragon Wrasse Inquiry

Has anyone had any experience with a DRAGON WRASSE (Novaculichthys taeniourus)?

Can anyone tell me about them?

Are they reef safe? Are they aggressive? How big do they grow? What do you feed them? What is the minimum gallon requirement for their keeping?

I have been reading conflicting things about them, and I thought I'd ask the experts here at TRT.

Thanks very much.

Hiya PJ,

We have a bird wrasse which is a little different but a lot of the info in the Scott Michael book is the same. The minimum tank size for the Dragon is 70g and the book is pretty much spot on. Also it says he is an aggressive meat eater and should be kept with other aggressive eaters. Our bird wrasse is the most aggressive eater in our tank.

The worrysome line is the part about him eating your clean up crew. Our bird wrasse ate every critter in there including smaller fish.

The last thing is has in common with the bird wrasse is the burying part. Our substrate is spread all over our softies and I have to get out the turkey baster every day to clean up.

This looks like an awesome fish for a decent size tank but once you go the aggresive meat eater route you are stuck with FOWLR which is what my 90g turned into.

Question

Thanks for the information, Phishnoob,

It sounds like the Dragon Wrasse is not reef safe.

Wiped out the cleaner crew, huh? Not good.

Anyone else know anything about the Dragon Wrasse?

Thanks everyone!

Wow pretty much no replies on this topic PJ. You should have called it "Testing... just ignore this thread" or something exciting.

Well...if it will make you feel better I can post something silly....

Seriously though...
Dragon Wrasse aka Rockmover Wrasse...

According to the fish bible it says Dragon Wrasses "will eat small fishes, ornamental crustaceans, and many other motile invertebrates (including snails, serpent stars, bristleworms and mantis shrimps). Nototorious for flipping over large pieces of rock and rubble and will also turn over live corals. This species buries and will require 2-4 inches of fine sand substrate on the aquarium bottom."

minimum tank size = 75g
max length = 11.8 inches

just look at their teeth and you can tell they are more than decoration. they will be great in a FO system, or your reef will be a FO in short time!
