Dr Evil wants to take my 100 gal help please
Hello everyone
Dr Evil / my wife, ok maybe she isn't really evil but she wants to take my 100 gal tank away, she keeps leaving notes all over the house even on the computer for me to sell it but I can't.
I have a 30gal reef right now and a 55 in the wings but the 100gal is something I know I am going to want to fill I can almost see the coral and live rock in it now, can you relate?
Ok now here is the thing it is a 100gal 24" tall so I am not sure how well it would work or should I let her win put the add in the paper and buy somthing like a 125gal he he he that is 18"tall I believe instead and 6'long instead of 5'long.
The plan here is to move the 30 to the 55 and so on or maybe go from the 30 to the 100 or 125gal.
any help is welcome
PS I had to sneek away to post this she is not as keen on the reef hobby as I am.
I am sory for swearing I know it is sad.
I have been stalling for weeks and Dr. bigelesworth and I can't hold her off for ever.

Welcome,
Now is the time to compromise. Promise you'll limit youself to just one tank....but make it the 100 . Take her to visit some really nice reef tanks and maybe she'll come over to your side.
This hobby has enough difficulties without having a spouse that is against it .

Welcome to The Reef Tank Mini Mee!!
Giving family advice is fraught with peril! While the 55 is not an ideal size for a reef (I know, I have one) it could be the key to your dilemma. The $$$$ it would take at this time to set up and stock a 100 could add fuel to the fires of discontent. The 100 wouldn't be my choice either because of the depth. My plan would be to sell the 100 (take the offendor from her sight); set up the 55 and down the road when she is so impressed with the beauty and diversity of life in the 55 reef, you could move into a 125 or similar size tank.
Ideally, the larger tanks are better for a variety of reasons but domestic tranquility is a major factor and the step wise process could be an option.

get the 125gal.. or even a 150gal. it has the same footprint but it`s taller. the secret to the wife with the tanks, just set it up when shes not home. deal with the problem for a little while and in the long run, you`ll still have the tank. or you could try to get her into the hobby, maybe she likes the way a certain fish looks. angels are a good fish for the misses. tell her it`s gonna need it`s own tank. one of my buddies got his kids to nag his wife. she wouldn`t even let him get a fish bowl at first but he ended up getting a 20gal.. a few months later she ended up buying a 90 gal and picked a few fish for it. sweet!!

Ok that is resonable I can always play the card but say I convince "THE BOSS"
My question is it it worth keeping the 100gal tall or would it be better to sell and buy a tank that is not as tall but longer or is there a difference in the height of a tank for reef keeping and would lighting and water movement be any different?also would it be any different to maintain?
anyone thanks

Mini mee- just show her the Mr 4000 tank site and she will be happy about the 100, although I agree a tank that is less tall is nicer. Maybe entice her by letting her pick out the fish?

Hello MarieK
It is funny you mention Mr 4000's web site I happen to be looking at it when she walked in the room.
I said look honey is that cool or what how about that size she said ya in your dreams well I guess it is ok to dream.
Let her pick out a fish is a good idea but first I have to convince her to go into the store.
But hey I am a reef nut what can I say
Mr bigglesworth and I thank you

It'll be just your luck, mini mee, that she'll fall in love with a Clown Trigger or a Dog-faced Puffer
