Question

Dosing kalk into Backpak skimmer

I tried dosing kalkwasser into the venturi inlet on my CPR Backpak II protein skimmer (I think I heard this tip from dr. Ron Shimek). This worked fine for 3 days but now it seems to have clogged. I expected this but not so soon! I'm using a Kent Aquadoser 1400 ml model and dripping about 1 drop every 2 seconds or so. The skimmer pump (RIO 600 RVT) is still running but I am getting no bubbles (no skimming). Anyone else tried this? I am now dripping into the pump intake in the CPR preskimmer box. I am considering replacing the RIO 600 with a Maxi-jet 1200 with RVT attachment. Anyone done this and dosed kalk into it? Thanks

Injecting Kalk into a skimmer or other equipment can cause problems as the kalk will build up on the surfaces and clog the apparatus. I drip mine into the output of a powerhead. The Maxi-Jets have a deflector attachment with a hole on top (designed to affix an airline for oxygen infusion) into which I put the drip tube. Even this needs to be cleaned periodically as the Kalk builds up on the deflector hole and the tube itself.

Cool

Thanks for the reply fishdaddy. What you are saying is what I am doing. The oxygen infusion you mention is the venturi I'm talking about.
