Does anyone think this is a bad idea?

I have a coralife PC that does not turn on the 10k's. Then I have to take the canopy down and fixture down as well. I open up the fixture and plug in the lights, and they are working!!! I havent figured out what the problem is but Im leaning towards a bad ballast since I know its not the switch because I hear the fan within the fixture working. Im getting tired of having to take everything off everytime my light doesnt kick in so Im wondering if its a bad idea to run the ballast remotely outside of the fixture so I can fiddle with it when it goes out again.

Put it on wood and unplug it and inspect everything. If all appears to be intact after an inspection though of the wiring and connectors you might need a new ballast. You can redo all the connections if they are done with wingnuts or something you can fix and hope for the best.

the bulbs are about 4 months old. I didnt think it would be the bulbs since both of them were off and my 2 actinics were working. I might swap the ballast from my actinics to my 10ks to see if it happens again. If it starts happening to my actinics, then ill know that it was a bad ballast. Now should I get coralife ballasts? Or can I use any other kind? Recommendations?
