chewie,
I see a anemone and a fan worm. Where is the comb jelly in the picture?

it is a little fuzzy but it is a white hair like tentacle under the duster and to the right of the anenome, I don't know if it is a jelly or not.

Maybe we're thinking of two different things. A comb jelly to me, is a clear free swimming medusa/like bioluminescent " jelly fish".

Hi chewie,
I think your friends were thinking of a sessile ctenophore, which is basically a small whitish translucent blob sitting on a rock, and occasionally reeling out a very long pair of featherish, delicate feeding structures. The ctenophore part must have been directly translated into 'comb jelly'.
I don't think that's what it is, though, the 'pinnation' on the thing doesn't look right. Does the tentacle extend/retract? By stretching/unrolling? Does it move at all? Any chance to describe the base from which the tentacle extends?
Keep in mind that LOTS of other things send out tentacles, from worms to cnidarians to molluscs and on.. you could even have a filter-feeding structure (not a tentacle) from a crustacean (barnacle) on your hands.

yes it does retract very quickly and often. I have a bunch of em' now. It's base is just a little blob attached to a rock i tried to get a better pic but no luck. I'm pretty sure it's harmless so looks like I have a new addition to my tank!!! thanx to all and I'll keep updates as to how they are doing or if they take over my tank!

Chewie;
I never got a chance so.....Welcome to The Reef Tank! Glad you got some ideas to narrow down your mystery critter. I see you're from Portland; glad to have another local aboard! Darn! I wish you would have came out to the picnic on Saturday; hopefully next year!

chewie,
Better late than never. It's a wormsnail. Probably Vermicularia sp. (knorrii?) Just happened to be looking something else up this morning and there it was. What you're seeing is a thread covered in mucus that they use for feeding.
