Do you clean your sump?

The reason I am asking is a lot of junk is settling in my sump and the pumps stir it up so it ends up in the tank when the return pics it up. How do you guys handle this? I never hear of people cleaning them but it seems like it needs to be done.

I dont, but i would if anything settled and i needed to.

A shop vac during water changes works great for this.

Oh yes, I clean mine often. My sump is setup like a settling tank, so detritus drops out, and removing all that is a big part of my bi-weekly waterchanges.

I try to use a wet vac when I do WC to clean the sump out!

I have found that a python no spill drain and fill is ideal for cleaning out the sump, and that a wet dry just removes water too fast to clean properly

I clean mine all the time using an old canister filter, the filter sucks up the dirt off the bottom and returns clean water to the sump so I can do it without doing a water change

My sump is a collecting area as well. I use one of those hand siphon things made for transferring kerosene to do my water changes.

Wouldn't leaving the detrius in the sump be just as bad as leaving it in the bottom of the tank?

yes, it would be actually worse than leaving in a sandbed tank as the sand can absorb it. It would be exactly the same as leaving it on the floor of a barebottom tank.
