I've never had mithrax crabs hurt shrooms or any other corals in my tank. I had 3 emerald crabs at one point. I did read somewhere that mithrax crabs are a relative unknown as to their real diets and so they could be 'shroom eaters...

Not through experience but I've been wanting to get a couple of crabs that are reef safe. So far, I've read there are a couple out there including Mitral that are supposedly safe but are opportunist. If their regular menu is not available they check out their options which means there's the possibility of them eating coral and if big enough small fish. Can quote exactly where I've read this though.

They can be very much individuals. I had several in my tank at once and some were ok and others wiped out a colony or 2. I would think they took the opotunity to eat the fragged(damaged) shroom.A lot of people have good luck w/them and they may be worth a gamble if you need to remove certain algea issues but overall IMHO they are not to be trusted .I dont even trust my hermits .Bon Appetite

They eat just about anything... I had one that develped a taste for snails, he was strong enough to flip over the largest turbos and just rip em to shreds!!
