Do Jumper's learn?

So against my better judgement, we got a Randall's goby for our Nano tank. Within hours, he jumped out, and landing in the overflow tray. Where we found him and put him back in the tank. This morning, he was on the floor...and we've now put him back in the sump, and after being in initial shock, he somehow seems alright.

My question is...do fish LEARN? First time he jumped, I'm sure he was stressed, but still in water...so not that big of deal.

2nd time, he came VERY close to a dry death. We'll he have learned anything from this? Or is he very likely to keep doing this until he meets an end?

I really don't think they are that smart. He will more then likely jump again.

there is usually a reason why they jump. usually startled. this occurs at night more when they are sleeping and a crab or snail bumps into them. in the beginning they are skittish so are more likely to jump.

do you have eggcrate over the top? this helps. it really helps if the fish is actually wider than the grating.

Put egg crate over the top. They will jump whenever startled.

problem is...the nano is designed to have an opened top. It overflows down it's own sides. I knew this would pose a problem.

Hopefully, like you said..it's just cause he's in a new environment.

time will tell.

I agree with eggcrate, although it might mess up the beautiful design of your nano. Maybe if you put a leash on it?! JK. I hope he learns, but I doubt it.

Ok i know you just made a acrylic thing to hold you lights. Just thinking maybe you can take some fishing line and attach it to the acrylic for the lights and tie it around the eggcrate and just have it off of the surface hanging would this work?

as a temporary solution? maybe. The problem is...this guy is literally the size of a paper clip. I didn't even know babies were this small, let alone fish old enough to ship out! I think I might need screening, or something.

really need to consider a different fish...I think that's my only real solution.

you can try plastic mosquito screening over the top. it should not affect the function of your nano that much. may look a little odd though.

while I dont really know the answer to your question.. I do think fish are smarter than some give them credit for.
For example when I first started my tank I used to turn off the powerheads at feeding time. My firefish was still pretty skiddish at the time and would only come out at feeding time (when flow stopped). After adding a sump and return pump I decided that I wasnt going to turn off PHs anymore during feeding... my firefish didnt eat for almost two weeks because he never knew when dinner was and the clown ate everything before he could get a chance. I literally had to acclimate him back into a feeding schedule. Now they recognise that its feeding time when I put the food disk on the corner of the tank... they swim rapidly back and fourth at the surface until I put some in there.

They know whats up... (besides... havent you read my signature?)
