Question

Do I need the canister filter?

Do I really need the canister filter for the tank that I have. If I clean it every 2 weeks will it really hurt anything.

Thanks

No, you dont need it.In fact, alot would recommend highly AGAINST it. But they do make a convient way to use carbon or phosguard/ban. If your looking into a form of mechanical filtration, start looking into getting an overflow w/sump. The overflow will surface skim your tank of all the nutrient rich water and direct it to your filtration of choice ie, skimmer, refugium, carbon etc.or a combo of all above, the sump is an excellent choice as it enables you to get all the sightly odds and ends out of your tank(thermostats, heaters, skimmer, etc) but more importantly adds to your water volume which in turn helps stabalize your perameters.HTH.

i use a canaster from time to time, keep it for a back up. the problem with changing it only every 2 weeks is the floss that are in them is pretty gunked up and can cause some levels to be high, ( one one type) there are several typs of canaster out there, most of the time you nitrate level will be a bit higher, this causing a headacke for you in the tank...

as long as you weekly clean it and everythign inside it.. shoudl be fine.. but with you sump i woudl say no you dont need it at all

Live Rock and a good skimmer are all you need for filtration. As said above , just use it as a backup or carbon to polish the water!
