do clowns jump?
im going to go pick up 2 clowns today. ( if the LFS has 2 i like ) i dont have a top for my tank and dont want to make one until i start on my canopy. i have had 2 clowns that didnt seem like the fish that would jump. but i also had them in a 120, and never had a fish jump. but do clowns tend to jump?

I've a 24" tank, and four times I've found my ocellaris clown in the overflow/sump. He hopped that far, at least.

Just get a piece of the plastic grid (my brain is not working right now, can't remember what it is called) that most people use for a top. You can cut it to fit and it is not going to hurt anything...this way you can get your fish.

The plastic grid stuff appears to be called egg crate on this site.

Home Depot calls it egg crate too! It can be found there with the replacement fluorescent light fixture parts as it is typically used to cover a 2' x 4' fluorescent ceiling fixture in commercial applications.

It will make a big difference whether you have a tankmate that "encourages" him to jump!

All fish can jump .. but clowns aren't considered jumpers. I suspect new fish are more prone to jumping probably because of the "fight or flight" response when startled by people walking by the tank or interaction with other fish.
When I purchase a new fish I wrap my QT with some paper to give it a "cave-like" feeling and then slowly lower the paper over the next week or two .. gives the fish a chances to acclimate to all the activity in the room where my Qt sits .. something to think about.
