DIY Standoffs / VHO Mounting

I'm about to order a VHO setup, and I don't mean to sound cheap (gosh, I must say that alot)... but $26 for acrylic standoffs to mount the endcaps isn't sitting with me very well. I am currently working on the wood canopy, can't I just use little pieces of wood to do the same thing?

I found a post by Doug about a year ago saying he'd done it, but not how or with what. Any suggestions ? or should I just shut my cakehole and fork over the $26 ?

I have mine about 6" off the water. I have the Icecap endcaps that screw up through the bottom of the standoff and into the mounting foot of the end cap. I had some acrylic(1/4") so I cut strips as wide as the endcap base, then I cut little squares to raise the strip up off the canopy and drilled holes to bolt the endcaps to the strip, then drilled the stand off in a couple places to attach th whole thing to the canopy. Does that make sense? You could do it with wood too, I just had the acrylic handy and its one less thing to water proof

sorry this is crude but the 0 represents the bulb and encap sitting on the long continous strip, the shorter lines are the small squares that hold up the main strip and ! represents the screws holding the whole thing on the canopy, only upside down. The ^^ are the little bolts attaching the end caps to the main support strip. HTH
Darn when I post this it compresses the stick drawing, and screws it up. You might hit edit and seee if it will show the original relationship, sorry

I would like to add the question, what is the optimum distance from the bulbs to the water ? Ie, how tall should the standoffs be ?

Thanks for the help, but I caved totally. I was going to be brave and order from Lampsnow and figure out how to make standoffs. But I'm such a loser... instead I just ordered an IceCap 660, three piece endcaps and acrylic standoffs. Rather than get the cheap ballast and URI bulbs, I'm getting the IceCap and hook it up with GE Daylight Ultra's and then replace with URI's as cashflow permits. I just kept thinking about both the versatility of the IceCap and Andy Howard's commitment to this hobby.
