DIY question - bulkhead fitting

Im starting construction of my sump today.

Im going to drill the hole for my return pump, bulkhead fitting. Problem is its not here yet (any day now). I dont know exactly how big to make the hole. I want to drill the hole before I put it all together in case I make a mistake.

Can anyone tell me the proper hole size to drill for a 1" bulkhead fitting? The website from where I bought it (Savco) says 2" but that sounds a little big to me.

just a tad bigger than the part that passes thru. As I recall we used a 1 3/4 drill on mine, its a little loose but it works

I just had one of my tanks drilled last week for several bulkheads. Most of the 1" bulkheads I've incountered use a 1 3/4" hole. I know that is the size of the fittings from Aquatic Ecosystems. FYI, 1/2" bulkhead = 1 1/8" hole, 3/4" bulkhead = 1 1/2" hole.

......if you have ordered the bulkhead fitting from Savco I would recommend contacting them and confirming the size. Their brand of bulkhead might be larger than most of the others out there....
