Disney Meets the Reef: Industry and hobby implications?
Hey all,
I'd like to know others thoughts on the upcoming Pixar film, "Finding Nemo" coming out sometime this year.
http://disney.go.com/disneypictures/...emo/index.html
My first thoughts after viewing this amazing movie trailor were, "Wow! this could do wonders for reef conservation and the reef hobby. What better way to showcase the reef to the general public than through Disney. It'll be like an underwater Lion King. Every little kid who sees this movie is going to beg his parents for a clown fish and a blue tang.....uh oh...maybe that's NOT such a good thing."
Now I'm torn on how I feel about it. But I'm curious about others thoughts on this. thanks in advance!

If it creates an awareness in issues critical to reef survival, I am for it. But we are easily swayed to take up causes then cast them aside later as other fixes come along to take their place
I kinda liked it better back in the good old days when those few of us keeping Marines were looked in awe from the masses

From what I understand, Nemo is a clownfish that gets captured and put in someone's tank, and the other clownfish (who is his dad) and the tang are trying to rescue him. I'm not sure how they are supposed to pull that off...
But if that is how the story works, things might swing the other way and make people think we are being mean to the fish by keeping them in captivity instead of letting them live in the ocean with their family. Who knows.

I think for youngers kids that have never had a tank it will just be another pixar movie, on the other hand kids that have fresh water fish and have seen clowns and tangs in the store it may have an impact on there interest. I have seen clips at the theater but not sure what the movie story is really about. I just look forward to seeing it

When I'm not taking care of the tank, I work for Dreamworks as a Character Technical Director so since we are talking about Nemo here's our "fish" movie coming out in 2004.
It's called Sharkslayer:

It looks cute, but I think it will make hobbiest look bad
-The true fact is that the corals are move over fished for food then the smaller amount that goes into reef keeping!

Sounds like a long time doesn't it Reefcam! Problem is, two years is pushing it, we could use three if they gave it to us.
