Direct feeding a skimmer

I'm thinking of modding my ASM g2 with the recirc mod.

I have two ideas to feed the skimmer.

1. directly drain the display into the body. If I do this, should I put a ball-valve on my return pump ( a Mag 5 ) to control the amount of water dumping into the skimmer? I don't fully understand the concept behind that mod. Can too much flow be a bad thing? Like can i back up my system and cause an overflow?

2. Use a 200GPH pump, through a UV sterilizer and feed this into the body directly. I would probablty use a ball-valve and a 'T' so I wouldn't have to use the UV but once a day per week.

Anyone have any other suggestions? Any thoughts on my two options?

1. yes , you can have a build up and possible flood. the over all reurn and drain to the tank must match each other, regardless of skimmer.

2. that can work.

Thanks Tim. I think I'll toss option #1. I thought about it some and think I'll utilize the UV like I spelled out.

I think I'll ditch the ball valve though and just put the uv on a timer to come on one day a week or so ....less hassle.

Just been studying other's experieces and plans. Most seem to just run it occasionally to avoid killing beneficial bacteria and to just clarify the water. I figure one day a week would be more than sufficient for my 65G tank.

You think running it 24/7 would be ok?

After reading a lot of things about a recirc, I have decided not to do the recirc mod just yet. Seems that the G2 skimmer isn't really designed for that.

But, I still think i want to have my uv dump right into the skimmer body...Would this be a bad idea? Should I just have the uv dump out close to the intake of the skimmer and call it 'done'?

yes, having the UV close to the intake will make the skimmer remove more from the water column

Thanks tim would there be any added benefit if I poked a hole in the skimmer body and attached the uv output to it?
