didn't crack underpressure....

today i got in alittle shop time at my friend's garage, and modified my acrylic refugium. i started off by drilling a 1½" hole to fit the ¾" bulkhead fitting. this will have a barbed hose fitting to attach the pump in the sump. with my confidence built up after now, the hardest part was yet to come. i decided that if i drilled the final hole to mount the spout, it would be best if i drilled the hole to match the inside diameter of the tube instead of the outside diameter. in doing so, i planned on cutting a 1" length of acrylic tubing, split the middle, and making a gap of 0.78539816339744830961566084582", so that i can make a smaller tube, fitted as an inside sleave for the spout. this would make the return spout stronger, less likely to fail, and a better contact seal when done.
while drilling the hole, i had to go slowly. i didn't want to flex the acrylic and have it shatter and split the seams, or overheat it an warp it. so it took about 15 minutes to drill thru ¼" thick acrylic.
all i need to get now is some weldon, and little more shop time to finish making the spout!
peace!

Southern Reefer, I got sundays off! I will let you know (via PM) when I really need to do it. Silly me, I already have it set up with water in it, but I have an extra 10 g that I can take and have drilled. then I need to know what kinda 'hardware' to buy. Then I have to have a stand that will elevate my ref above or at my main tank's top level. THEN I can call you! thanks!

the exhuast pipe

here are the parts made from 3" acrylic tubing. the first ring is ½" wide. the inside sleave 1¼"wide, split down the middle and gapped. followed by the overflow assembly on the right.

the sleave and ring come together to form the feedthru coupler for the overflow pipe to the main tank.

now if i only had some weldon, i could finish up this project. but i still need to smooth down the edges a bit. to do that, i will glue a piece of fine grit sandpaper to a small plane of glass, this will provide a flat surface, preventing the edges from rounding over.

the supply overflow

3" x 14½" tube, prevents the draining of the refugium if the pump ever fails. can't wait to get some weldon!
