DI water smells like dead fish???
My DI water tests 2 PPM with my TDS meter, the cartridge is almost fully discolored indicating time for replacement but with the TDS meter it looks fine. However the smell..... yuck!
Is it time to replace my DI and why does it smell?
Thanks,
Bill

Wow Bill that doesnt sound good is it the container or the bucket, bin, barrel, tub. i know some plastics can get funky
Have you checked the carbon prefilters or are you using a mixed bed with carbon DI like a Tap Water Purifier?

Yuck!
I've used my DI when it was past time to change the media and it never smelled bad.
Strange...

Bill. Two questions. What is the pH of the source water for your DI? Are you using an RO in front of the DI?
Whenever I regenerate the anion of a DI, the resin gives off a very strong smell of amine, (which could be described as rotten fish) If the pH of your source is high and you have no RO, or your RO has failed you could get this odor. On the other hand, 2ppm sounds high to me, but I'm not familiar with home units. I'm used to a conductivity of 0.06uS, silica of 5ppb, and sodium of 0.1ppb,

bill,
sounds like a good cleaning is needed. if you are using a holding coontainer check for mold. if you are using tap water to filter then it may be the water itself ...meaning all the chemicals traped in the filter maybe giving off the smell.
good luck

the holding containers are only used once every 4-6 weeks and are stored dry. several different kinds are used and all smell. i do have a RO before the DI. the smell goes away when i add salt mix. my water goes through a water softener, particulate filter, 2 carbon filters, RO then DI. i have no way of knowing my pH of the source water but imagine it is pretty neutral.
thanks,
bill

DI resins do release amines - which we recognize as the smell of rotting fish. Its not a problem. Watch the TDS in the output water and change it based upon those numbers regardless of the sniff test.

Did you change brands of resin? ALthough I know the resins sometimes smell, I'm not certain why some do more so than others.
