Question

death of the emerald

Ok so I get up this morning and check on the tank like I always do. I see my emerald crab on the favia brain (moon coral.) Its still dark in the tank at this point- so I grab the turkey baster to get him off- seems to pick at corals sometimes. And come to find that he is dead. Did the brain kill the emerald? I'm kinda glad he is gone- he messed up my feather duster pretty bad.

Not sure if the brain could kill him---we will leave that one for the experts---emerald crabs are a PITA in general---maybe you are better off that he is gone, it will save you alot of headaches.....Anthony

PS: A friend had one that got so large he was starting to snag his small fish!

And my Turbo died the other day too, which I don't mind- just wondering if something bad is about to happen!! Everyone else looks ok however. I did add a good amount of chemicals in my last attempt to boost the calcium, but I haven't added anything in about a week. Now if only that horseshoe crab would die- then I'd be in good shape!!

I had an emerald crab for a couple of days untill i sat and watched him for about 5 minutes rip a huge chunk of coraline off my live rock. Back to the LFS he went.

I was thinking the same thing -- it might have been a molt. Did the crab have eyeballs and "guts"? They do shed their shell periodically and usually go into hiding while the new shell beneath the old one, hardens.

Could have fooled you.

yeah ya know the molting thing never occured to me!! I should know enough now to figure that out! I guess I just didn't expect it to molt- got it about 4 months ago I guess and maybe this is his/her first molt?

When I get home from work- I will look more into this!!

i think its dead- I could only find one claw and 2 legs so I pulled it out of the water and cut the claw open to be sure. It wasn't hollow.
