Dead Diamond Goby

I just lost my first fish.

I added a Diamond Sleeper Goby to my tank on Saturday and today it turned up dead. I came home from work to find my Kole Tang eating from the carcass. Gruesome. I don't know what went wrong.

My tank stock includes:

2 Ocellaris Clowns
1 Kole Tang
4 Green Chromis
1 Firefish
2 Fire shrimp
Assorted snails and hermit crabs.

My water parameters are outstanding: no ammonia, no nitrite, roughly 10 ppm Nitrate. Ph at a stable 8.3 and Specific Gravity at 1.025. I don't keep corals so that's all I check for but all the rest of my fish are very happy, thank you very much.

The Goby seemed to establish itself just fine. It found a spot in the rocks, dug up a bunch of sand to make a hole for itself, etc. It came out to eat on Sunday. I saw it on Monday but it didn't come out and eat. I didn't see it at all yesterday and then today its dead.

Would the Tang have attacked it? Any ideas on cause of death? etc? Suggestions?

Stinks to lose such a cool fish.

i acclimated him by putting him and bag in the tank water (without opening the bag) to get the temperature evened out.

then i add a cup of water, roughly, to the bag, and then I pop him into the tank.

i've never had a problem with this approach but perhaps he needed a slower acclimation?

I would say that was probably the culprit.

i would suggest drip acclimating him although its kind of odd how he survived more than 24 hours. i feel like if the acclimation process was the culprit he would have died in the first 24 hours...

yeah, he was definitely fine for at least 48 hours.

I might lay the blame on the Kole. Everyone in my tank gets along, except for the Kole and the diamond goby. For the first couple of weeks Vera Tang chased goby under the rocks whenever she saw it. Now, after a couple of months, she gives a half-hearted effort to harass goby a couple of times a week, but no harm.

I lost 2 gobies to jumping the first night in the tank. Now, I'm pretty sure the jumping was to get away from Vera Tang.

If you suspect your Goby died from the kole, it's probably true IMHO. If I had figured out the reason before I would not have added another goby. Maybe a goby is not in your future.

Vera Tang! I love it. Great name. She wears a beautiful gown every day.

Thanks this helpful. The goby did build its hole in a spot that I would consider the Tang's territory too (although the Tang seems to think its territory is the whole tank, lol), but this spot is particularly owned by the tang.

All right. Maybe no diamond goby for me then. Too bad, but there is plenty of other stock to choose from.
