Damage assessment
so i come home to see my tank, and i was speechless. there is hair algae, cyno, and coraline all over the tank. the hair algae is at least 5inchs long in some spots.
i ran a battery of tests the the results were.
ammonia: 0
trite: 0
trate: 0 (which i thought was weird and did 2 test and the same.)
ph: Very high
alk:very low
do you guys think if i do a 25% of 30% w/c thats to much and it will shock the tank? any suggestions on how to clean the tank?
can i scrub my liverock in RO water or does it have to be saltwater?

that wouldnt be too large of a water change, just make sure your SPS and stuff arent out of the water for too long if you have any. Good luck, hair algae stinks

If its just an anemone, just leave his rock in there and take the other rocks out, scrub them off with an old toothbrush to get all the hair algae off then swoosh them around in fresh water to get all the pores off, works pretty good. Im doing an experiment with vinegar curing live rock that had so much hair algae that i couldnt get to go away, its doing pretty good, put it in 50% vinegar and 50% water for 24 hours, scrubbed it off, put it under high lighting and its been 3 days with no hair algae or anything in sight, so it works pretty good

ahhhhhh its worse than i thought! on closer inspection on various things in my tank all 4 of my PH's were clogged with, i dont know what it is, and flow was reduced greatly. got them soaking right now. also my skimmer was covered in this wierd junk inside and out. cleaning that also.
i have yet got to clean the tank. first thing tomarrow part 2 will commence.
clean ,glass, sand, rock, do W/C, and lights
man what a head ache!!!!

Hw long tho, thats a lot of hair algae to sprout up suddenly, it's a classic over feeding situation, no nitrates showing cause its all locked up in the hair algae cells, but with growth like that you got a boat load of phosphates and nitrates.
The clogged powerheads sound like anemone in the blender scenario

i was gone for 5 weeks, and no blender situation, my anemone is alive and well.
i don't no what happened but i don't think my brother over feed i gave him a calendar with a feeding schedule and told him how much food to give. any way the reason why i think he didn't over feed is because i was begging him for months to look over my tank while i was gone. you guys have no idea how difficult it was to convince him to do this.
the gunk that was in the skimmer and power heads was this yellow-white goop that looked like snots.
the 5inch hair was only around the areas where the ph's were. on the glass it is only about 1-1.5inch long same on the rock

If you have a reactor I'd run some phos sponge and start scrubbing!

Sounds like your brother unplugged the tank to plug in his X-Box and forgot to plug it back in . I know what your doing this weekend
Sorry for the trouble and keep us posted on your progress . Pics would be great for "archives'
