critter ID please
Cycling my new tank and found this guy crawling along the sand.... Bottom has many legs (~14). Very thin red antenae near what I think are they eyes. Some kind of pod? Good or bad?

I would say it belongs to copepods or amphipods family! Was trying to find a good link for these but sure someone will! Johnny

Looks like a type of Isopod, most are harmless herbivores.

Ok Cool. Because I saw a couple of them crawling around in the sand. I'll just let them be.

I just got 100lbs of Fiji LR from Premium Aquatics. Its a new DSB made of southdown seeded with LS from my old tank.
They won't attack my fish when I put them in, will they?

I have never herd of them in the aquarium. I think it is cool! I remember catching them on the beach. Hopfully some one will read the thread that can give you a edumakated opinion.

I have some of those in my tank also...
Never have bothered the fish, but i have found them holding on to a snail with a grip of death....they stay in the LR with the pinchers sticking ou and when a small snail comes by, they latch on....now that I think about it, I don't know if the snail has them or they have the snail...when I remove the snail the inchers are moving around pretty good, so I assume they are the pincher and the snail is the pinchee...this has happened several times with no apparent damage to the snails...I do find them occasionally on the pickup tube of the power head eating stuff off the screen...
they give me the willies (like spiders), but like spiders I think they are good...at least til they prove different

I have quite a population and variety of isopods in my tanks, but I hope I never run into to that last type of isopod. (DevilPod)

Biob, from your description and keeping iin mind the probable source (cross contamination included) it is moslikely some type of Sphaeromatid spp., although ID via picture is a bit shakey...If you really wanna know, Dr Shimek has a good site as well, he will take your pic and try to id it.
