MJ1200 is pretty strong isnt it? That seems too strong Id think. Dont they come with 600-900s? I have a rio on there, and now after fiddling enough with my cup, its working well. I also have Bio-Bale in mine.....

Mine uses the MJ 1200. I had trouble with microbubbles when I first set it up. After it broke in it quit, however, whenever I change the SG or add chemical to the tank it causes the bubbles to come back. Are you using any additives? Is your fresh SW the same SG as the tank? Do you notice if the bubbles are worse at times and then seem to get better?

I let mine run with the 1200 no air stones and adjust the air vale on the air intake closer to open to get the bubbles to stop.

What rio pump do you have and how would you rate it for noise?

I have a cpr with a m1200 and it took about a week for the bubbles to go away. No air stone or mod done It works well but like it has been said the noise is bad. I have gotten used to it but the future wife hates is. Does anyone no how to quiet them down?

As for noise, it's a noisy skimmer. Always has been for me and I have never seen any "mods" out there for making it quieter. As for the bubbles, I had them for about 4 days then they dissappeared. They ususally reappear for a day or so after each water change if I don't get the SG of my new water close to the tank water, and if I add any additives to the tank. Otherwise the bubbles tend to calm down and quit after 1-2 days.
I am using the venturi on the MJ 1200 and it is noisy, but I have gotten used to it. From what I have heard and personal experience HOB skimmers all have varying degrees of problems with microbubble generation. If you want to eliminate it totally (including with water changes and additives) go with a sump and in sump skimmer.
