Correct me if i'm wrong - Electricity and volts

But doesnt everything in the US run off of 120 volts and about 60HZ? I could have sworn that is the case. I plugged my halides into a couple of timers and they turned on for about 30 minutes then shut off. Then I waited a bit and rotated the timers till they shut on again. They flickered then went off. So I plugged them directly into the surge protectors and they were fine. I read in small print on the timer instructions that they can only handle 115 volts. I dont get that one at all.

House voltage normally fluctuates between 100 to 140 and averages around 125. Most products are rated for 115 or 120; but can handle the flucutation.

There's alot of voltages 208,277,220,480 etc.But if it's rated 115,120 would be ok.
