Corner/HOB Overflow...Is a Hybrid Possible?
This thread really belongs in the "What If" forum...so you'll have to bare with me.
I dislike the looks of HOB overflow boxes (please don't ask why, I don't have a good answer )
What if a corner overflow were installed...something like the ones made by Reef Mania http://www.reefmania.net/products-overflows.php
Instead of a bulkhead drilled behind the overflow, an acrylic box was hung on the back of the tank behind the area where the overflow was. A typical U-tube siphon would move the water from the overflow to the acrylic box, which would have a bulkhead drain.
I'm thinking about using this on a new 125 FOWLR tank.

That would be fine. the goal of the inside box is to keep from sucking fish up and to maintain the siphon. you just need to make sure that the water level would be able to be high enough on both ends to maintain the siphon.

you can get external overflows. these are usually built on when the tank is built, but if you have an acrylic tank they can be added on later. they are a box glued to the back of the tank where the overflow normally is in a tank. the weirs are cut directly into the back glass. so the water flows over the weirs into the external overflow box. this overflow box contains the drain for the sump.

Right...I plan to make the inlet to the Durso in the outside box only a couple inches below the slits in the internal overflow...and get a large enough U tube so that both ends stay submerged when the pums are off
Anyone know where I can buy clear U tubes. I've seen them for sale online before, but I don't remember where.
Thanks,
Andrew

Sorry, I was writing while you were posting Geoff.
I have seen that before and like it, but the tank is already bought (undrilled glass 125g). I drilled my 30g and was thinking I might try doing it to the 125 until I saw how thick the glass is. I'm going to check around Kzoo for someone who drills tanks, but I'm not too optimistic.

i just got done drilling 7 holes in the back of my 125g. it is no different than drilling holes in a smaller tank. i think it is easier. as long as you take it slow you will be fine. the thicker the glass the less likely you are of cracking it if you accidentally push to hard. drilling 10's is a bugger. if your silly drill is to heavy you can crack one of these.

Did you use a glass drill bit?
I did my 30 w/ a dremel and I don't think that would work well on the 125.

yea, i used a diamond hole saw. if you check my rebuild thread Tom posted a link to the seller i got the bit from. total with shipping for a 70mm (for a 1.5" bulkhead) was $15. i was able to drill 4 holes no problem.
