Coral skeletons

Any advice on how I can cut this piece of coral longitudinally? Or whether I even should? Is it okay to use old coral skeletons, provided they do not contain any harmful substances as reef base rock?
This piece was found on a sandy beach. I would like to use it to build 2 shelf's in a reef system? Its about 4 inches thick. Sorry I don't have a side view.

You would have to cut it with some sort of band saw, more then likely one that is a wet saw. You should not have any troubles with it in the tank. I would cook it a bit before I added it to the tank but that might just be a matter of opinion. My base rock was coral skeletons and I like it cause it looks natural.

And welcome to TRT.

I like it. I think it looks pretty good. I mean.....reefs are built out of coral skeleton. All the rock they are on was once coral. So it sounds good to me. You found these washed up? Thats a massive chunk to make it to the shore. But pretty cool.
