Watts per gallon is a very misleading unit of measurement, while useful to some extent it really doesnt addres the type and intensity of light.
Some light sources are better than others, depending on the types of animals you want to keep.
Say you have a 10g nano reef, if you put a 75 watt incandescent bulb over it, you have 7.5 watts per gallon right? Can you grow corals under it successfully, No. If you were to get a 70 watt metal halide bulb of the correct color temp you would have 7 watts per gallon that would do very well. The MH light output is much more intense than a household incandescent. This experiment would work the same if you replace the normal bulb with say a 65 watt power compact like the home depot floodlight for instance. less watts but a lot more light
OK off the soapbox, assuming you are using florescnt lighting of some kind, with bulbs rated at 6500K color temp or higher, I would say most of the soft corals and some of the LPS would do well in the tank

I thought so, I stand by my original recommendation of softies and or some LPS such as bubble, trumpet or candy cane, frogspawn, etc.
BTW I from time to time use posts to illustrate points I feel are worth knowing, and since this BB is directed at begining reef keepers a lot of real basic info tends to get repeated. Its easy to add to a thread like this since its on topic, but I don't want anyone to feel like the lecture is directed at them personally, for informational purposes only

Doug,
Do you remember that thread that Fishdaddy started a few months ago with the Christmas tree light over a dixie cup? That thread was hilarious, yet it proved the very point that you made here for the watts per gallon "rule." You should try to dig that one up and move it to the archives.

Oops Jon Hewett Started the thread. I guess Dick (Fishdaddy) was the first to implement a dixie cup reef.
Doug:
Thanks for bringing that back up. That proves a great point about lighting and the watts per gallon rule.

doug and everyone else who's been so quick with helpful info-
i can't tell you all how much i appreciate your responses. i have a 55 gallon fish-and-liverock-tank that i'd like to convert to a reef tank. (man, i wish i had discovered this message board a few months ago when i set up the tank! it would have saved me lots o' headaches!) reading these posts, and even the lectures (LOL!), have been a tremendous help. keep 'em comin'. the more i read the questions you've answered thousands of times, the more the info sinks in.
i don't know if i'm more educated or more confused, but i certainly know more than i did.

Hi Hayday! It is alway our pleasure to help others. I just noticed that you are from Columbia, MO. I live in Lenexa KS (a suburb of Kansas City). We have a lot of local reefers up here who meet every couple of months. We have people drive in from all over Missouri, Kansas, and even Nebraska. My wife and I lived in Springfield untill a few months ago and we haven't missed a single meeting of this group yet. If you are interested, I recommend that you check out http://w3page.com/fishline/cgi-bin/ikonboard/ikonboard. This board has a lot of members from Missouri and Kansas. Please feel free to join the board.

Does anyone know of a manufacturer who makes 10,000K Christmas tree lights? Or a RR Dixie cup? How much capacity does the cup have after adding a 4" sandbed?
And I thought that second tank was out of the question. I bet I could put this whole thing together for under $10
